14 Récitations by the French-Greek composer Georges Aperghis (1945) is both music and theatre. Aperghis wrote this composition not only for the performer’s voice but for her whole body. Vowels and consonants, the building blocks of our language, are permutated, articulated and coloured, resulting in a piece of extraordinary intensity.
The French soprano Donatienne Michel-Dansac literally embodies this music, with the technical, mental and musical skills Aperghis’ demanding score requires: ‘This music has taught me a lot, not only with regard to my voice, and I am still learning from it. I am very grateful to Georges Aperghis for this ongoing inner journey.’
